Field test: Salomon X Ultra 360 Edge Gore-Tex
In the technical hiking segment, Salomon continues to expand its X Ultra range, now renowned for its versatility and comfort. This summer, we took the new X Ultra 360 Edge GTX to tackle alpine trails: scree slopes, challenging passes, wet sections and long technical descents. Here is our verdict after several weeks of intensive use.

FIRST IMPRESSION: A TRAIL DNA THAT STANDS OUT
From the very first steps, you can feel the connection with the world of trail running, which is so dear to Salomon.
- Look: more dynamic and streamlined than a classic hiking boot, with a modern design that stands out from the giants in the sector.
- Weight: moderate (around 420 g in size 42 2/3), making it a comfortable boot even on long days.
- Fit: snug without being restrictive, with good midfoot support and precise lacing.
ON THE FIELD: GRIP AND STABILITY AT THE APPOINTMENT
Strengths
- All Terrain Contagrip® sole: a big plus, it proved reliable on all types of terrain, even on unstable scree or wet ground.
- Stability: the ADV-C Chassis technology does its job well. On technical traverses, you can feel the shoe guiding your foot without constricting it.
- Cushioning: surprisingly comfortable, even after hikes of more than 20 km, thanks to a well-balanced midsole.
Areas for improvement
- Stiffness on descents: although the shoe remains precise, some heavier hikers may want a little more stiffness for a more secure footing.
- Breathability: the Gore-Tex membrane ensures flawless waterproofing, but on long, hot days, the shoe can quickly become stifling.
- Durability of the mesh: after several trips, no tears, but some signs of wear on the outer part. To be monitored over time.

WHAT TYPE OF HIKER IS THIS FOR?
The X Ultra 360 Edge GTX is clearly designed for those who like to cover a lot of ground at a good pace, offering the ideal compromise between lightness, dynamism and protection.
- Ideal for: alpine hiking, technical terrain, fast-paced outings.
- Less suitable for: carrying heavy rucksacks over several days (lacks the rigidity of a proper trekking boot).
OUR VERDICT
With the X Ultra 360 Edge GTX, Salomon has succeeded in offering a shoe that blurs the lines between trail running and hiking. Lightweight, precise and grippy, it will appeal to sporty hikers looking for versatility and a running-like feel.
We like:
- Contagrip® traction that is reliable everywhere.
- Long-distance comfort.
- The dynamic and modern look.
We would prefer:
- More breathability in summer.
- Increased rigidity for heavy wearers.
In summary: a modern alpine hiking boot, ideal for technical and fast outings, less so for heavy and demanding treks.
